From 1980-1994 Allan owned a computer sales and service organization in Brooklyn, NY. In 1994 Allan sold Comp-U-Doc, Inc. and began working at New York University's ITS department as one of their Network Administrators. After a lapse of almost 30 years Allan decided to go back to school and obtain his second Associates degree in 'Computer Science' at the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS) at NYU. Just prior to receiving his Associates degree, Allan was accepted to the Gallatin School of NYU for their Bachelor of Arts degree in 'Individualized Study.'

In his last semester at Gallatin, Spring 2001, Allan was asked to teach a course on Local Area Networks based on his knowledge of computer networking during his business career and his time at ITS. Allan agreed to teach that one semester, but was asked to continue teaching at SCPS.
